The Sheriff's Department’s Judicial Operations Division is in charge of security at the Juvenile Justice Center (JJC). Here at JJC we are much more than a courthouse. Our Facility also houses the Juvenile District Attorney’s Office as well as the Juvenile Probation Office. We offer services including Youth and Family Counseling, Drug Court, Computer Lab, Program for the Enrichment of Girls (PEG), mediation and many others. JJC is a community partner working in concert with family service agencies including Hogares, CASA, La Familia, Peanut Butter and Jelly, and many others.

The Bernalillo County 2nd Judicial District Court Security unit, a unit within the Judicial Operations Division of the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, consists of Court Security Specialists whose responsibilities range from weapons screening and maintaining courtroom decorum to providing essential public safety and law enforcement services. The deputies ensure that court environments are safe and secure for the judiciary, court support staff, and the public.
The Court Security Unit strives to set the standard for all law enforcement agencies serving the judicial system by leading the way in professional development through accreditation, enhanced training, and state-of-the-art equipment. All of our energy will be devoted to providing the safest and most secure court environments possible.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Court Security Unit consists of one Division Commander, one Lieutenant, 1 Sergeants, and 18 Court Security Specialist Deputies. Court Security Specialists are responsible for the physical protection of judges, court personnel, attorneys, witnesses, juries and citizens who have business within the Bernalillo County 2nd Judicial District Courthouse building.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
Weapons screening at all entrances.
Maintaining order and decorum in courtrooms, waiting areas and court premises.
Guarding, transporting, and isolating sequestered juries.
Effecting arrests, remands, and confiscating contraband when necessary.
Assuming responsibility for all emergency response, including medical, fire, bomb threat, etc.
Weapons Screening in the Courts
Visitors to the courts may experience a slight delay upon entering the building because all persons entering and all packages, briefcases, bags, and containers brought into the Bernalillo County 2nd Judicial District Courthouse shall be subject to search by x-ray or other screening methods. Per New Mexico State Local Rule 2-108.
These procedures are necessary to ensure the health and safety of all who have business in the court building. Based upon the weapons screening statistics and the numbers of arrests and incidents, these are prudent measures.
